As everyone knows, Megaupload.com, several days ago the well-known and very popular file sharing website, has been shut down by the U.S. Department of Justice. Also, according to a notice posted by another popular file repository, FileSonic.com, this service no longer allows users to share files. However, you're still allowed to upload new files and access them through their cloud folders. It looks also like Uploaded.to has blocked access to U.S. based users.
List of working file sharing Megaupload alternatives
It's obvious that many ultimate "file sharers" as well as the casual users out there are looking for reliable alternatives to store and share files online. Here is a quick list of some services that could be an alternative for you (this list will be updated soon), but don’t blame us, when the FBI will seize the site of your choice ;)
- RapidShare.com - RapidShare's file sharing service is based in Switzerland and allows users to upload files of any size and share them via an email, or Twitter and Facebook links. RapidShare has no storage limits, but the files uploaded by users of the free "entry level" are automatically deleted after certain period of time without any notifying. However, if you want to utilize RapidShare as a cloud file storage service, you can upgrade to RapidPro for about $39 to ensure that your files will stay there for 150 days.
- MediaFire.com - MediaFire is very similar to RapidShare and lets you upload any type of file, but the maximum size of a file for free users is only 2GB. There is also no storage limit, although similarly to RapidShare, your files will be automatically deleted after certain period of time which you can avoid by upgrading to a Pro account ($9 per month). Having a Pro account also provide you with an extended allowed file size (up to 4GB).
- Dropbox.com - a well-known robust cloud storage service. Dropbox gives you 2GB to store your files for free and also allows you to share them with anyone via public folders, as well as with other Dropbox users through email invitations. You also can upgrade your account to 50GB storage just for $10 a month (or up to 100GB for $20 a month).
A lot of Megaupload faking sites are coming up only with an IP address. Be warned and don't fall for scams! The website at http://109.236.83.66/ claiming to be a new Mega website is FAKE!
